Let’s get straight to the point…
Our communities are experiencing high rates of HIV/AIDS diagnosis, teen pregnancy, mental illness, rise in violent crimes and drug addiction. As noted by the Center of Disease Control, in 2009 adults and adolescents living in the South had the highest incidences of AIDS in the United States. In a similar 2010 fact sheet also available through the CDC, teen pregnancy birth rates for teens between 15 and 19 years of age in the United States were 34.2 per 1000. Twenty percent or more of children living in the U.S. have and suffer with a mental disorder. More that half of these cases begin by or before age 14. In addition, drug use and addiction continue to be prevalent in our society resulting in mental illness, disease and family dysfunction.
